私が小学生のころ、ソ連（という名前ももう忘れられかけている）が最初の
人工衛星を打ち上げた。当時の新聞や雑誌の記事でどこかの小学校で、校庭に
一列に机を並べて顕微鏡のようなものをのぞき込んで人工衛星を観測している
様子が紹介されていた。あれは一体何だったんだろうと長年疑問だったが、
最近サテライトスコープというその道具を発掘して疑問がとけた。

これは広視野、低倍率の望遠鏡の対物側に４５゜のミラーを置いたもので
見上げる代わりに下をのぞき込んで楽な姿勢で空を見るものだったのだ。

When I was a school boy, the USSR (the name itself is almost fading away)
launched the first Sputnik. The "space boom" swept the country and people
tried to find it orbiting. This instrument is one made in that period
to watch the sky without looking up. I've seen a picture in an magazine
article of school boys sitting in line looking into "satellite scopes".
