　６Ｘ６判のスプリングカメラは画面サイズの割に折り畳んだ時の携帯性がよく、戦前か
ら広く使われてきた。これを折り畳まなくても薄くなるようにミラーを使って光軸の方を
折り曲げたカメラが１９５０年代のはじめにつづけて２種類登場した。１９５２年の トミ
ーと１９５３年の リッチレイ６である。今回並べてみて初めてわかったのであるが、両者
には同一の特許出願番号が記されていて、同じ人によって設計された可能性が高い。
　このシステムでは１２０判の大きなフォ−マットに応じてミラ−も大きくなり、スプリ
ングカメラに対してコンパクトさで利点が少なかったことや、時代がすでに３５ｍｍに移
ろうとしていたこともあり、実際に売れた数は非常に少なかったようである。
　しかし、ミラーで折り畳む光学系はその後フジカツイングやオリンパスＡＦ−Ｉなどの
ちょっと前の２焦点コンパクトカメラの望遠側に使われていた。フィルムサイズが小さい
ことと、長い望遠レンズをコンパクトに収納する上でこのシステムに利点があったのだろ
う。
　その後ズ−ムが主流となったコンパクトカメラには折り畳み光学系は使われないようだ
が、望遠レンズを搭載したレンズ付きフイルム、写るんですｎｅｗＴＥＬＥには現在でも
採用されている。こちらの場合は光軸を上下に折り畳む方式で、フランスのシクロ−プと
同様に横長のフォ−マットに適しているのであろう。

In the early '50s, two cameras with folded Z-shaped optics appeared.
They were TOMY(1952 Zuiho Opt.) and RICH-RAY-6(1953 RIchray Trdng).
They tried to reduce the thickness of then popular cameras for #120 film.
With two cameras at hand, I found that these cameras were made with
the same patent and probably designed by the same engineer.
They both didn't make much success, but the optics were applied to
recent dual focal length compact cameras such as Olympus AF-1 Twin
Fuji Twing. Even today, a film with telephoto lens, "Utsu-Ru'n-desu
new TELE" from Fuji Film use a folded optic.
