戦前の日本ではベスト判のカメラが全盛だった。それはベスト判のフィルムが安価だったのと
引伸しをせずに密着焼きで見ることの出来るサイズとしてはベスト半切が最小だったからだろう
３５ｍｍカメラは非常に高価で、フィルムも一般的ではなく、普通に使われる物ではなかった。
日中事変、太平洋戦争と日本が戦争に深入りしていく中で資材は統制されてベークライトボディ
や金属鏡筒、さらにはベークライトの剛体蛇腹などの代用品が使われるようになり、カメラの
名前もKinshi(金鵄)、Zessan(絶賛)、荒鷲など日本的な物に変えられ、さらには一部の軍用
品をのぞいてカメラは贅沢品として製造が禁止され、やがて敗戦へと突き進んで行った。
戦後のベスト判は戦前からの持ち越し品を輸出用に少量生産しただけで、新しく設計された
はほとんどなかった。 日本人が再びカメラを持つ余裕が出来たころには６ｘ６判の二眼レフ
が人気となった。その後５０年代の終わりにアメリカで興った４ｘ４判のスーパースライドブ
ームにのって日本メーカーもベスト判２眼レフを作ったが、ブームは続かず、日本では３５ｍｍ
カメラが主流となり、ベスト判が再び人気を得ることはなかった。
すでに数年前にコダックは１２７のフィルムを中止しており、現在はクロアチア製の
モノクロフィルムがクラカメ店によって細々と輸入されている状況である。
In prewar Japan, 127 sized cameras were most popular.
It was because the 127seze was the smallest possible format to view
contact prints. And the 127 rollfilms were readily available anywhere.
As Imperial Japan had involved into war with China and WWII, supply for
the camera production materials like leather, some metals etc shortened,
cameras were made with substitute materials like bakelite and the bellows
were substituted with metal tubes. Even camera names changed to
traditional Japanese names such as Kinshi(golden eagle), Zessan(applause)etc.
After the WWII, popular demand moved to 120 type films and only few
newly designed 127 sized cameras appeared untill a small boom of
4x4 TLRs for super slides in the late '50s and that doomed the format .
