Tougodo cameras

Established in 1930, the Tougodo was named after General Tougo who beat the Russian
Baltic Fleet.The Imperial Navy claimed against using the general's name but Tougodo
already had acquired a personal grant from the General himself and the Navy could do nothing.
Their product was inexpensive entry level cameras and aimed at young photographer-to-be.
The existing camera stores refused to sell Tougodo products. Tougodo chose to sell their
cameras on the streetside demonstrating the developing process they called "no-need-darkroom".
There were red and blue pallettes in front of a sales person. A small strip of film was held in a
paper sheath. After the exposure, the sheath was bathed in developer liquid in the red pallette
tinted red to prevent further exposure. Then he broke the sheath and placed the film in the
fixer in the blue palette. There came out a picture before the audience surrounding him.

Many people started photography from a Tougo camera just like the postwar baby-boomers
started out from a Fujipet or a Start 35.

After the WWII, Tougodo was divided into two companies. One in Toyohashi and the other
in Yamanashi. Tougodo in Toyohashi made better cameras like TOYOCA, TOYOCAFLEX and HOBIX.
I don't know much about the Yamanashi plant. They seemed to made cheap Meisupii line of cameras.
